Up2date, CD volume, XMMS....

Hi, I have just gotten my wireless working for linux.....(many long days and posts in the wireless networking forum!!) Now I have a few small problems/questions...
1) I have a huge list of updates from the up2date manager and I dont know which ones or how often to update and accept. Should I just always accept the updates that it wants to install? Would this mess anything else that I have configured(which isnt much as of yet..)?
2) I am trying to play music, and I get no sound. I have tried to turn all the volume settings up etc. and now for some reason it is telling me that there ia drive error. I havent been able to get the default CD player to work since I upgraded from FC2-FC3 last week, and before that I didnt have sound to begin with. My sound card test works, just nothing when I play CDs...
3) This is kind of tied in with the last problem. Should I just download XMMS and use that to play CDs and Mp3s, or is there something better for linux? I dont think it was installed on my box, tried to get if trom the command line and through a GUI, but cant find it... I am really new so any help or just suggestions would be appreciated.
