If it wasn't removed (or broken) it should still work. Do you get tar's help screen when you run 'tar --help'?

So maybe try to unpack it in two steps. Choose any .tar.gz file you have and run
gunzip filename.tar.gz
The result should be filename.tar. Then untar
tar xvf filename.tar

I tried that and it does the same thing. I downloaded a .tar file and it worked fine to untar just anything with

.tar.gz comes back with an empty command line... but does not untar the file...

That would make it look like the problem is with the gunzip try gunzip --help or man gunzip.
