untared executable files don't work

I'm running Mandrake 8.2.

rpm packages install ok, but tar packages don't.

typical example: I've just downloaded the netscape installer, untared it, cd'd to the netscape-installer dir.

the netscape-installer file is listed with an asterisk, but when I type it in as a command, bash tells me it can't find it. I've checked user rights and "execute" is yes for everybody.

this happens with ALL the tar packages I've downloaded.

What have I got wrong?

Are you adding ./ before the command?
On a default install the current directory is not added to the path for various safety reasons.

presumably it's not on the path

./netscape-installer
or
sh netscape-installer
