Unstable system after upgrade to 14.10 from 12.04
 
upgraded from 12.04to 14.04 on a dell studio. Install problems, apparently. Now with a very unstable system, crashes often. Would like to return to 12.04. Can I just install from a disk with 12.04?

Certainly worth trying it - but with the proviso that you will have to re-install all customisations and additional packages etc.
I assume that you had the foresight to place /home in a separate partition.
I'd suggest you try the 2014.04 version, since that is a LTS release and don't upgrade again until 2016.

Bear in mind that your data file formats are 2014 vintage - 2012 versions in a few cases may be different.

Take a full backup of everything before you start.

Jeremy, Thanks for the prompt reply. I am not sure how much forsight I have. By separate partition you mean?

I think Ubuntu has upgrade option on installation disk which atleast saves data not sure about config.

Did you upgrade to 14.04 or 14.10 (the subject and text of your post conflicts)? 14.10 is still in beta, so a certain amount of instability is to be expected and normal.

To see if /home is on a separate partition, do "df -h" and see if there is a separate entry for /home. In either case, though, I'd recommend backing up all important data and config files to an externl device (another system, USB hard drive, whatever) before you reinstall 12.04.

Going back to 12 may help you or may not. We don't know what is going on just yet. As a rule, I never do in-place version updates. I always reload from scratch.
As noted above you can try to save data off or maybe keep some mount points but you will be only able to do a full clean install. No downgrade will be practical.

I upgraded to a 14.04. I try to avoid .10 dist. Thanks for your reply and advice.

Note that the OP is proposing a downgrade.

Computer systems are written to handle with upgrades; they can't be written to (necessarily) cope with downgrades.

Thanks for your interest and help. I went with the 14.04 as suggested, not a downgrade. I now have a stable system.
