unmounting cdrom
 

for the last week or so everytime i put a cd in the cdrom it wont eject and i have to boot xp to be able to eject the cd. this is very annoying and want to fix it.
does anyone know the command or the steps to o fix this minor problem.

also, i know redhat does not ship out with mp3 support . can anyone tell me whats the command using apt-get or the rpm package to be able to play mp3. thanks in advance

i had the same problem with my cdrom, just type eject cdrom or eject cdrom1 if it's the second.

yes, in redhat distri the XMMS-player doesn't support mp3, you have to download this RPM from here and then type rpm -i filename.rpm .

Try 'umount /dev/cdrom' or 'umount /mnt/cdrom' and then 'eject' to get the CD to unmount and eject. You cana also try 'eject' alone and see if it unmounts and ejects, usually works. Don't include the ' in the commands.

As for the MP3 support:
To get XMMS MP3 support in Red Hat Linux, you can install the XMMS MP3 Plugin for Red Hat Linux and Fedora Core files. They are available for RH8, RH9 and Fedora.

Unmount the CD.
press the eject button on the drive itself.

i tried that already michaelk , for some reason once i insert the cd into the cdrom drive, it wont eject unless i go to the terminal and type eject. when i first installed redhat 9 it worked fine. any ideas or advise will be appreciated

Make sure no applications like file browsers or terminal windows are accessing the drive while unmounting.

im running redhat 9 and KDE

I don't think there is a way to unmount automatically. How would a drive know when it is not used anymore. in KDE under system tools there is a graphical mount and unmount tool. Understanding mounting will give you an idea why you can't eject without unmounting. I was pretty annoyed with the same thing, CD not ejecting, from the beginning.

It's been a while since I used RH but when I had 9 there is a Disk Management option in the menus somewhere I just left it on my desktop, that way just click the unmount button on that drive. (I don't like typing).

I have a similar problem in Fedora Core.

Although i have tried all that stuff and nothing works. When i try to umount it says it is devide is busy, which it is not, nothing is accessing it.

did you try just typing "eject" from the console? that worked for me

why do not we have some automatic mounting and unmounting like in windows


this small things help in making linux more appealing
