Uninstallment Of UBUNTU
 

Okay before i go on about my problem i just want to apologise for not sticking with ubuntu, im impressed that free software is available such as ubuntu but guys its not for me, right here i go

Ive searched hi and lo trying to find away of sorting this problem out but ive been unsuccessful every where. I have the latest version of Ubuntu currently installed on my laptop. I did this about one month ago. Stupidly i just installed it straight away so my computer has no partitions on it, its just installed on my hard drive. Its a decent piece of software, but things like youtube and ahem *coughs* xtube *shock* wont work due to codecs or whatever they are blah de blah, so basically i want to remove ubuntu and just put windows xp on the laptop.

Ive tried to install the cd from boot up but it doesnt recognise the hardrive or something? So i come to you for your advice, but im not very computer knowledgable so i would really appreciate it if someone could give me step by step instructions in baby language lol, im desperate for xp to come back, PLEASE HELP!!!!

First, you don't need to post the same question more than once. If you've read the rules (which you agreed with when creating an account), you would know that.

Second, we need more details. Your machine specifications or at least the name of your machine would help us to search the net after drivers or other solutions. Also, when posting an error message, post the error message, exactly as you get it. Just saying "won't work" or "I've tried everything" is impossible to help you out.

But the "error" you gave us "it doesnt recognise the hardrive or something?" it looks like you may need to install drivers for the hard disk when booting from the XP cd. If you read carefully when you boot from your CD-rom, it stands "Press F6 to Install a Third Party Driver". You may need to insert a floppy disk with the drivers for the HD. With luck, you may be able to tweak the bios and install XP without the drivers, but I would not recommend you to do so.

I am a bit worried about helping you, because I don't really know how much you can about computers. In your case, I'd ask a friend or someone close to you to give you a hand or send you computer in to a professional. Either that or fix Ubuntu. Installing flash is not really that hard...

Thankyou for your reply, its much appreciated, ok im not as blonde as i sound, its just some things confuse me i will try my best if you would be willing to help me, as im using a laptop i dont have the option of using a floppy disk, the laptop is a compag presario c300, any other information needed please let me know.

You may need to erase the disk before installing XP. I have heard that the Windows installer can see Linux partitions and think the disk is bad.

I think this is a good tip. Boot with your Ubuntu CD. Once it is done, open a terminal and type "gparted". Gparted is a very simple tool to use. Either delete all partitions and create a partition that Windows can see (that would be NTFS or FAT32).

When you've done that, try booting again from your Windows XP CD. If that does not work, try contacting HP. I guess this is your machine:

I am sure you will like Ubuntu. It is a fine piece of software. I just set up a Ubuntu box and I am going to set up flash right now. Talk about good timing :).

Well, my first tip for you is to bookmark the following link:

It has answers to nearly all the questions you will ever have. However, I never succeeded in getting flash to work in the way the guide suggests. So let's do this together and manually. It will be a good intro to Linux and basic commands for you as well ;)

Note: all the following assumes you are using Ubuntu x86, not Ubuntu x86_64.

- Again, I never could get the plugin to work in the "Ubuntu way". Instead, go here:

- Download Option 1: .tar.gz. I will assume that the file is saved at your "Desktop".

- Click in "Applications -> Accessories > Terminal"

- In the console, type "cd Desktop" (always without the quotes). Type the following:

- tar xvzf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

- cd install_flash_player_9_linux

- Now, it is only one command to go. Make sure you don't have any web-browsers open now.

- ./flashplayer-installer

- You should get the following message:

- Press ENTER. You will get:
- You will get:

Press y, then ENTER again.

- You will get:

Press n and you are done. Now go ahead and test youtube.com, with a cool video like this:

And you are all set. Feel free to delete the files you no longer need:

- Type:
- Close the terminal by typing "exit".

First of all as a fellow noob and a long term windows user, if you are already frustrated with ubuntu and feel like giving up on getting xp back, I suggest you go back to xp. Windows does not require as much learning about the operating system as linux. The learning curve for linux is much steeper then windows.

On the other hand, if you have interest to learn and patience to figure things out, LINUX IS GREAT!

Now for the flash player install instructions:

1. Download flashplayer for linux here http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...ShockwaveFlash

You want to download option 1

2. Remember where you downloaded the file. Open a konsole terminal program(icon with the black box). If you downloaded the file to your desktop then type the following to change directories to your desktop
3. Make sure you have the file in that location by listing files in that directory.
If the file is there great you are on the right track.
4. Move the file to your home directory.
5. Extract the file6. Change directory to the extracted file.
DO NOT CLOSE YOUR KONSOLE YOU WILL COME BACK TO IT LATER

Now this part is tricky. Ive seen several posts that people cannot get flash player to work because they did not follow this step...
You will to need to know what browser you use and its version.
In your browser at the very top, with your mouse click on the help tab and click on about...
Mine says firefox version 2.0.0.11. Yours might be the same or you might be using iceweisle. (sorry for the typo)
Write that info down on a piece of paper.
Your browser should be located in the following directory on your computer "/usr/lib". You will need to know this. Mine for example is located "/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.11". If you can't find it you can always use search on your computer to get the exact location of your browser.

8. Go back to your konsole and type the following
9. Flashplayer will ask you which programs will you will want flash installed on. This is where you will have to know what browser you are using and where it is located. You will have type it without any mistyping the exact location of your browser and its version. As stated before, mine is located here "/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.11". Type yours in and hit enter.

If all was done correctly everything should work.
Exit the flash player installer and your browser should now work to view flash videos.

How to remove ubuntu and reinstall windows.

Im sorry that you have not had much luck here.
Having read some of your other posts.
I think what you have done is instead of setting up a dual boot you accidentally over wrote your xp partition with linux. Or in other words the entire harddrive is ubuntu. It sounds to me that you should stick with xp.
Here are some instructions on removing ubuntu and putting on xp. You will need to start over by repartitioning your entire harddrive with the ntfs format. The ntfs format is the one that windows uses. As previous people have stated, the windows boot cd will not recognize the linux format.

First the reformatting process:
1. Download gparted live cd, burn to disk and reboot with gparted. It is an easy gui partitioning cd.

2. Once booted, to get past some of the informalities such as language, for each question just hit enter for the default setting.

3. A gui (graphical interface) will pop up and gparted will scan your harddrive. Select delete to to delete all of your current partitions and select execute (enter) a button with a green checkmark.

4. Next reformat the harddrive to ntfs. Select new or something like that. Select the entire disk. Select the ntfs format and hit execute or enter. It will take a while to complete.

Second reinstall windows:
Now once the reformatting is complete, remove the gparted disk and pop in the xp disk. Reboot.
The xp disk should now be able to recognize your computer's harddrive and be able to re install xp.
Just follow the instructions that pop up on your screen from the windows reinstall. I don't remember much of the details but, I don't think there is much to it.
