uninstalling ubuntu for a newbie.
 

I somehow installed 2 versions of ubuntu on my computer. how do i uninstall them to start over? it ony shows me a black screen , but does say theres not enough room to do anything. i just need an easy way to uninstall please.

How exactly did you install two versions of ubuntu on your computer? Could you tell us how exactly you installed it, and the exact error messages you are getting?

If your photos,music,and docs and such are backed up then reformat and reinstall .

I was using the computer and an update popped up saying I needed to download the new version. so, I clicked on "yes". Halfway through, it went black, and hasn't worked since. It says there is no room for the programs and then shuts down again. Is there a way to remove one of the versions?When I type in my password, nothing happens. Just a black screen with a bunch of gibberish.

that is NOT two installs ,just a normal everyday "update" .
You installed Ubuntu on a way too small partition . There is no room left
reinstall using a larger partition

Sounds like you were notified that an upgrade was available and you took the opportunity to do so. Upgrade is not the same as update, an upgrade will give you a new version so I expect if you were using Ubuntu, you upgraded to 11.04.

Could you post some partition information? Do you know how to get it? Is Ubuntu the only operating system you have? Do you have any Linux Live CD to use to get information?

This is most likely to happen when there is no room left... There are two alternative solution to this -

1. Insert a live DVD and free some space from / or /home/ or ..You can empty trash , cache ,(/var/cache/apt/archive) etc.

2. If u have enabled login from root then there is possibility that u may login through root then try to free some space and make a new account may be this can help you.
