Uninstalling Software

So I see in Linux we can install software via rpm, automatic programs, and by compiling source code. But how do we go about getting rid of software when the time comes. I know sometimes installers will spread files around in different folders. How do we track all those files and remove them?

I know rpm's usually come with an uninstall option. But what about the other times.

Sorry if this is dumb, I just want some advice on how to maintain control over my filesystem.

Thanks.

Most makefiles (when you compile your own) come with a 'make uninstall' option. And all the package managers provide for uninstallation.

As for those third-party applications that are usually executed through a binary executable or shell script, they should be should be installed in /opt/application-name. Normally, their installers also setup a file called uninstall, into the installed application's home directory.
