Uninstalling old version of Firefox - Ubuntu

I've just upgraded to v3.5.3 of FF in Ubuntu but the old version 3.0.x seems to still be installed. Can I get rid of it, if so then how?

Also, I installed it using my admin account but my desktop account still points to the old version which seems odd. Do I just change the target to the FF file in my admin account's home folder? This also seems an odd thing to have to do.

Many thanks.

:)

Best way is to open synaptic, search for firefox and then uninstall the older version.

Presumably you installed FF 3.5.3 direct from Mozilla? AFAIK it's not available as an ubuntu package.

If that's the case then removing the old Firefox is not as simple as it sounds because of dependencies. I don't know how Synaptic copes with that. I did it from the command line using
Code:

aptitude remove firefox
It offered several solutions for dependencies. Some of them looked dangerous so I kept refusing them until it offered removing sun-java5-plugin and sun-java6-plugin and nothing has obviously broken since.

Being as how FF 3.5 is not supported by unbuntu and they issue dire warnings about using it, it is useful that its files are not installed in the unusual locations; that way you can install an ubuntu-supported FF at any time while leaving FF 3.5 intact.

I went right ahead and manually changed the command in the GUI panel launcher to /home/c/Repository/firefox/firefox (I had unpacked the FF 3.5 tar.bz2 in /home/c/Repository) along with changing it in /home/c/.config/autostart/Firefox.desktop
.
Later, it turned out Xfce had found FF 3.5, presumably from one of the two above, so Menu->Network->"Firefox Web Browser" also launches FF 3.5. If you are not fortunate enough to be installing Xfce 4.6.1 (!) you may need to do some work to get the right Firefox from your menu.

Thanks Catkin, I have FF 3.5.3 working now, whether or not I followed best practice is anyone's guess :)
