Question Uninstalling mesa

I'm running debian woody on my bargain-basement AMD Thunderbird 750 box with a Nvidia TNT2 video card.

OpenGL apps are deathly slow. Granted it's not the most powerful computer or video card, but by deathly slow I mean *deathly slow*.
I can get bzflag to work ok, as long as I set the options so that the graphics look like something from an atari 2600. And tuxracer? forget it.

Looking in aptitude I see that I have both the nvidia-glx-src and xlibmesa3 packages installed. From other posts and discussions it looks like I should uninstall the xlibmesa3 package.
Am I going to break anything by doing so?

Is there a better way?

thanks.

I just moved Mesa to a new dir outside the paths mentioned in /etc/ld*conf, installed Nvidia's stuff and ran ldconfig. I think that's a good approach to test if all will work, else move the libs back.

find /usr/lib -name libGL.\* -o -name libGLU.* > /tmp/mesa.list
tar -cjf /tmp/mesabackup.tar.bz2 -T /tmp/mesa.list --remove-files
