uninstalling help

I'm admitedly a real newbie and I tried to install wine, but I know I did it wrong. Now I want to uninstall it, but I can't figure out how. Can anyone give any hints as to what I might be doing wrong? I tried:

rpm -e wine
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Anything else I should try? Wine is a hard program to get going, right? Or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Dave
