uninstall linux/install win xp

hello!

i've been using linux (fedora core 2) for a while now, and now i need windows again. i try and install windows xp by starting the installer with wine, but after it is done with the preparation of the installation, it whines about "datasegment in drive C that is not supported" and so it cannot define the computer to boot xp from the specific drive.

i have also tried booting my computer with the win xp installation disc but for some reason it doesnt seem to regignise my cd-rom drive before linux has started. (update bios maybe?)

trying to install winxp in wine will not work.

press Del or F10 or whatever key it tells you as it's booting, before the linux bootloader and enter the bios. you do not need to update the bios, simply change a setting that will recognize the cdrom as the first boot device. then you can carry on with the installation of xp (after a restart of course).

nope. ive tried changing cd-rom as the default boot device from bios but it doesn't work. it still doesn't recognize the win xp disc (well, the cd-rom drive at all).

it doesnt boot a single cd. win98, win xp, linux, you name it, i've tried it.

i have an idea though; would it work if i copied the contents of my xp cd to my hd, made a boot disk so i'd get to ms-dos and run the xp installation? but then again, if i copy the cd to the hd on linux, i wouldnt be able of seeing them on ms-dos, right?

theres a number of reasons that wouldn't work - the one you named above, and windows is also pretty picky about where it installs from.

do you hear the cdrom drive spin up when you start your computer and you have the cd in? make sure you have the disk in with the computer completely off, then boot it with the cd still in to be sure it has enough time to start reading the cd (instead of booting w/o a cd and inserting it as it boots).

the disc was in all of the time.

there is no problem with the drive while linux is running though; it just doesnt work before linux has booted

again, does the drive spin up as you boot? that determines if it's even reading the disc.

you might want to check your settings in the bios again and see if there's any other settings that pertain to this problem
