Uninstall?

Is it possible to uninstall a compiled program (firefox for example)?

Or do I have to know where the files are located and delete them? If so how would I know? Are there some default locations where files of a compiled program go?

Also, where would I find good information on how the directory structior in linux works?

Most likely if you have firefox installed you didnt build it from source. You probably downloaded the binary from their site.

However, if you build somethink from source (ie: ./configure, make, make install) you can uninstall with the command make uninstall in the source directory.

Hope this helps.

Scroll down to section 3 where it talks about what directories are used for what purpose.

If you really want to be sure all the files are getting removed when you uninstall something, you should get a distro that supports RPM installations. That way you can install and remove programs very cleanly.

if you have installed it with some package (rpm, deb...) it's simple to remove, but if you've compiled and make installed it.. i think you should remove all files... executables are usually in /usr/bin/ for firefox you'll find also a dir in /usr/lib/ but i don't know if this is always valid... anyways.. you can do this
as root type
'updatedb'
it will take some time, it will make a list of all your files
then:
'locate firefox' or something like that, so you'll see all files with this name, or with this name in the path
good luck

rpm -e <package name>
The 'e' stands for 'erase'.
