unetbootin live usb of linux mint fails to boot

hi

I'm using unetbootin on debian stable (wheezy), to create a live usb pendrive of linux mint.

the USB pendrive's first partition is FAT16 for unrelated windows files.
linux mint should be on the 2nd partition.

I've downloaded a LM10 live usb iso image, and used unetbootin to create a live usb. it said everything worked fine, but when I try to boot into the live usb, I get an error message:
failed to find live filesystem (or something along this line)

any suggestions how to fix this?

TIA

This web site has links to download a program that will allow you to store multipe .iso files on a USB stick, and boot into any of those live .iso images. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

Yeah, use a clean usb drive.

I have always used the pendrivelinux.com, referred to by gentisle, with a great deal of success. I would explore that route. A freshly formatted usb stick would help as well.

I'd wonder if syslinux can see the second partition.

jefro: I don't know if syslinux can see the 2nd partition, but it's possible to partition a USB stick, use the 2nd part as an ext2 partition, and have live linux work just fine. PenDriveLinux.com explains how.

What usb drive are you using?
If it's a cruzer the first partition acts as a cdrom, also to boot it, it will be listed as an hdd.

tnx for the replies.

I'm using a silicon power 16gb pendrive.

I've used this setup before, namely 1st partition fat, 2nd partition live linux mint and it worked.

Did you check in bios to see if it's listed under hdd's.
If it is you will seea "+" sign next to hdd, click on the"+" sign it will expand & you will see it , then move it up.

it's listed and recognized by the pc, but the boot fails and gives the error message I've listed above.
