Understanding USB
 

I'm having some problems working with USB on my Xandros system.

basically I am getting something like this "unrecognized option '/dev/ttyUSB0'"

1) Can someone help explain the difference between USB0, USB1, and ttyUSB0?


2) If I run lsusb it returns : Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1199:0120 Sierra Wireless, Inc.

Does this tell me if I should be using a certain USB designation?

"Something like"? We need to see the exact error. What are you doing to get this error? What are you trying to achieve?

You are trying to get your wireless car to work? AFAIK: Sierra wireless cards have poor linux support, but there are ways for specific cards. (Hint hint.)

Well, I am trying to get a Sierra Wireless 595u mobile broadband card to work with Xandros but so have have been unable.

The error that is confusing me is:
pppd: In file /etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo: unrecognized option '/dev/ttyUSB0'

I was also hoping someone could help explain the basics (or link me to a place that does) of USB vs. USB1 vs. that ttyUSB0 and ACM, which is the original reason I posted here in the newbies section.

What do you do to elicit this response? You are not just sitting there minding your own business, you did something: what was it?

pppd is not normally appropriate for a wireless card - however, sierra have set their cards to interface as if they were dailup modems (shudder). Don't know if this extends to the current GPL drivers though.

MP595 is supported. Don't know if this includes the 595u though.
Kernel 2.6.23+ includes the drivers and patches.
The site has a warning:... check with your carrier. Do they do pre-activation?

What does "modinfo sierra" tell you?
What does "pppd call CDMA" tell you?

Funny... suspect your modem is at /dev/USB/ttyUSB1
These devices are only created while the modem is present and detected, so ls /dev/ttyU* should give you a list.

If none are present (they are normally a link to /dev/USBx anyway) then point pppd at the existing /dev/USB0,1,2,3... etc until you get a hit.

The command issued to get the system to put out:
pppd: In file /etc/ppp/peers/1xevdo: unrecognized option '/dev/ttyUSB0'
was:
pppd call 1xevdo

As for the 595u, it has been activated and works well on a Windows notebook.

Sort of... it is clear that the /dev/USB directory hasn't been created' and you have the driver you need. The link I gave has a howto to get pppd to dial with your modem. However, the howto also uses /dev/USB/ttyUSB0 as the device.

ls -d /dev/USB ... bet that directory doesn't exist.

Chances are that it is one of your /dev/usbx files then. Change your pppd configuration to use /dev/usb1 then /dev/usb2 then... etc. I've had reports of modems being found on one of those. Stop when one of them works.

I have the same problem and changing my /etc/ppp/peers/gsm file to point to /dev/usb* does not help either.

/dev lists the following

Pointing to /dev/usbdevx.y-epvw gives

(4.13_epxx are created when i plug in my modem).
