Unable to telnet from windows to Red Hat Linux 9.0

I am new to this forum and a newbie as far as networking under linux goes.

I have a desktop running red hat linux 9 and a laptop running windows 2000. Individually, everything is working fine. But I am not able to telnet to the linux box. I have a Dlink 713P router.

So far my observations have been:

1) I can ping to the linux box.
2) I can telnet from the linux box to itself. This would suggest that the telnet daemon is running on port 23.
3) I tried using ssh, but had similar results.

I'd appreciate any help in resolving this...

What is the error message?

Are you running a firewall on the RH box? If so try again with it shut down.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

It was a firewall issue...
