Red face unable to open port 25 for some reason? why?

I can't get mail, which lead me to this, but i have tried to telnet to other servers that have port 25 open, and I always receive a not route to host error, Ive tried flushing my iptables and that was a no go. I really am desperate to find the issue here and I am unable to, Please help I've run out of ideas.
