unable to mount hd on mandrake install

I am currently trying to install mandrake 8.2 on my machine with no luck. Every time the install software tries to mount the created partitions to install the os it freezes up. Sometimes I will get a message stating unable to mount the root partition.

Just for kicks I used fdisk off another disk and recreated the partitions. I then tried to use the existing partitions with the installer with the same results.

Is this possibly a hardware issue? I am about to try partition magic to see if that helps. Any advice?

What are you using to partition the harddrive originally? Diskdrake works very well. If you are trying to partition the drive as something other than ext2 or ext3 or reiserFS that may be the problem. Try that and see what happens.

thanx, here the scoop

It was originally linux formatted before when I was running TurboLinux. Then I cleaned it out and the root partition was reformatted with a linux jfs -ext 2 file system.

I tried my other cd for Turbo Linux and it could mount the drive and installed fine. Unfortunately I want Mandrake. So I reformatted the root partition and tried Mandrake again with no luck. For kicks I tried the text only (non-GUI) version of the Mandrake installer only to have the same results.

I just don't get it. I even thought maybe it was just being really slow so I let run overnight on my machine and it was still stuck when I checked today.

The mandrake disc was burned from an .iso image off of a mandrake mirror so I am assuming the disc is good.

Another thing: I made the root partition on a primary. Will it accept a logical for root?
And is there a possibility that my secondary drive (install target) is too outdated (even though I have never had a problem with IDE devices being outdated)? Or even possibly related to me using ATA cables when one drive is not an ATA? (real shot in the dark)?

I hope this is all a dumb mistake I am making.
Thanks for the help.

oops, i missed that first reply. I first let the installer do the partitioning and formatting. Now I am using Partition Magic. I will try DiskDrake next.

I think I should mention that this drive has had formatting problems before when it was used as .mp3 storage for my win2k setup.

thanx for the idea

Here's what I'd do. I would plop my mandrake disk in. Select the keyboard I want, then the install type (for me I choose expert because I like a lot of choices). Then when you get through configuring your mouse and scsi devices, you should be near partitioning. Depending on which disk you are installing to, replace my 'b' with either 'a' for your primary.

Click hdb tab, click the (probably red) colored bar that represents your Harddrive. Choose delete (assuming you have nothing on here you want). Make a smooth white bar across the top. Click the white bar, and choose mount. Then choose your mount point (I usually specify / first) and the filesystem type (Go with a journaling, either ext3 or ReiserFS). Choose a size (this is up to you, do a search on this site if you are unsure of how big to make each partition --- I usually dedicate most of my partition size to / but that's just me) and then click ok. If you are going to make more mount points, do them, and do similar things as described above. Just to give you an example(not suggesting this is right or wrong): I have /home (as ext3 with 3GB) /boot (as ext3 with 50mb) and /LFS (as ext2 with 7GB). Once you are finished with all your mount points and such you will want to make a SWAP. so mount /swp with the remaining empty (white) space. If you are unsure on how big to make your swap (or to save to make your swap) do a search on here, this is a heated topic and I will not recommend a size on here.

Now that should have taken ALL of the white space and changed it into a dark red or something color. It is important that you have the / and /swp at least. Now you can press 'done'. And continue on with the rest of the install. If you do all the above steps and it still fails, please let us know.

And if I confused you, or if someone has a 'fix' to my response please, let us know. (Us does not mean I am borg, see I said I.) ;)
