Unable to login as root.

Trying to install Nvidia graphics card drivers on Fedora Core 4. I get an error : nvidia-installer must be run as root.

[user@localhost ~]$ sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run
Verifying archive integrity... OK
Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86 1.0-9746................................................................................................ .................................................................................................... ....................................................................................
nvidia-installer: Error opening log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for writing (Permission denied); disabling logging.
[user@localhost ~]$ login root
Password:
Error sending status request (Operation not permitted)

Login incorrect

Im obviously new to this and probly going to bang my head on the desk when I realize how easy it SHOULD have been but any help would be greatly appreciated.
