Unable to load GUI(Gnome or KDE) on bootup

Hi,
I am using Red Hat Linux 5, and on bootup, the UI screen (Gnome or KDE) doesnt comeup. Theres a terminal only and i have to login in that and then run the following command for loading Gnome:
startx
Is there some way i can configure the default UI (either Gnome or KDE) to startup (without running startx)?

GUI mode

hi

Probably your system is running on Runlevel 3 (CUI) you need to change to Runlevel 5 to boot from (GUI).

solution:

You need to change the runlevel by editing the /etc/inittab
and change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault: and
reboot the system.

good day
