unable to install updates


i am unable to install updates and it suggests to clean the temporary install packages from / directory using sudo apt get clean , how do i do that please help, i tried the command sudo apt get clean it asks for password but does nothing , sudo apt get upgrade command updated the ubuntu 9.04 i have on my system but still the update manager keeps poppin up and when i try to do the security updates it suggests the same prompt comes up which asks me to clean using sudo apt get clean and says that not enough space on / what to do , help!!!!

It would help if you posted which distribution you are using. As for how to clean out the downloaded packages, well, you posted the command already so I am not sure what the problem is.

You don't have enough space in /
So try to free up some space, or increase the size of /

i fixed the problem which i had where my updates were not getting updated because of no space on / , when i looked at the boot splash screen i had two installations of ubuntu side by side so i decided to reinstall using the entire disk and now entire disk is used by single os and the problem vanished .
