Unable to install the grafic driver

Hi,

i install Linux the first time and i am desperate.

I installed SUse. In the beginning after i put the DVD in, comes a menu, if i want to install manually or not. Whatever i press here the monitor becomes black afterwards and nothg happens. Later on i discovered that there was an option, if i want to install it in text mode. In text modus the installation worked ok.

Now the next problem is, that the graphics look very bad. I have a monitor of 19 " and the resolution is not better than 600X800. Colors are absolutly stupid, as if only 16 colors are available. And this i cant change in any way. I suppose the graphic driver is bad so i got one from internet and got it installed. (i have a graphic card SIS 661FX)

Here is the link ...winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml#download

i dont know what X.org/XFree86 means .

I also went in Sax2 and changed the graphic card and the resolution. But in the list xapi there is no SIS 661FX and if i chose somethg else i get an error message "X Server Test failed"

Can somebody please help me. I cant even work on that PC now...

Regards, Lela

You can run xorgconfig, it will edit your xorg.conf file for you. All you have to do is answer some questions.

Lela, if something is like this
Code:
$ command
It means enter that command at your terminal prompt. Like Xterm, Aterm, or at console. Understand now?
