Unable to install GCC
Hi,
I downloaded Fedora 16 (live image) and am running linux from my pendrive (4GB). I was trying to install GCC, but I wasn't able to do it successfully. When I type "yum install gcc", it starts off well, 'transaction successful' message is displayed, but after that a message 'Killed' is displayed and my laptop hangs up. The mouse pointer doesn't move and nothing happens even if I wait for an hour! Actually I tried "yum groupinstall "Development Tools" and tried "yum install gcc gcc-c++" too, but the same thing happens. I get the message "transaction successful" and then after 1 or 2 lines, "Killed" is displayed. I just started using linux. I'm just a few days old and I'm wanting to learn more about linux. Please help out. Thank You. |
Well, Fedora is RedHat's R&D ditro and thus bleeding edge/unstable; it may or may not work.
For a new guy I'd recommend Centos if you want free RHEL, else maybe Mint or Ubuntu if you like an MS look/feel. Have a look at any of top 10 or so at distrowatch.com. Welcome to LQ :) |
you might want to have a look over at fedoraforum

That pendrive might be mounted as read only Also a live image is a very bare min. of software ( so it fits on a CD ) how did you make the bootable thumb drive did you use the fedora usb tool ( yes a MS windows tool to make a linux bootable thumb drive) https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/ to make the pendrive or http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ |
Hi JohnVV,
I made the pendrive bootable using LiveUSB creator. The reason I did that was I remember reading somewhere that I can carry the pendrive anywhere and all the stuff I do in linux will be stored in my pen-drive! (In other words, I can carry my linux workstation everywhere I go). I don't know how far that's true. But now, I'm not able to install GCC. I also wanted to install it on my hard-disk, but again wasn't sure how to partition my disk. I have a single drive 'C' with 144GB of free space. Please let me know how to install onto my hard-disk, if installing fedora onto hard disk would allow me install GCC successfully. Thank you. |
