Unable to install flash plugin to watch youtube videos

Hi!

I just installed the latest Ubuntu version for laptops. When trying to watch a youtube video, i get a message that i need to install a plugin. I follow the process and I get an error message that it can not be installed or that it failed. Can anyone help?

Go to Ubuntu Software Center (Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center), and install "Ubuntu restricted extras". This should take care of Flash, as well as most other file formats not normally supported by Ubuntu.

A little more info would be helpful, but I'm going to make two assumptions.
1. You are using Ubuntu or one of its variations.
2. You are trying to install the flash player from a web browser.

You need to use the package management tools to do this. In the case of Ubuntu, you're probably using Synaptic, and it probably doesn't have the necessary repositories enabled. But the nice thing about Ubuntu is how newbie-friendly their documentation is. Check out their help page. To install flash, you must have (at a minimum) "main" and "multiverse" enabled. Personally, I recommend enabling them all (main restricted universe multiverse). Good luck, have fun, and remember to read/search.

One of the nice things about Ubuntu and friends is the tons of well written documentation. That should be the first place you look for help, second should be the Ubuntu forums or irc.
