A typical issue on new installs is that X-windows won't start because something is not right in the configuration file. I've never seen a blue screen, however.
When your first boot up, it there a menu (from GRUB) which includes "safe mode", "rescue mode", or something? Also, is there an option to boot into Windows and does that work.
AND---did you remove the installation CD when you re-booted?
