Unable to install due to C compiler error
I'm a total newbie to Linux. Have just installed Red Hat on my HP machine (previously running Windows). Thereafter I've been struggling to install various software like flash, media player etc.
While most have been successful with much help from this forum, am stuck with the installation of xine media player. The error is as belos:
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
I tried to locate "gcc" using the "whereis" command and the result was:
So as far as I understand is that I've gcc installed but since that directory is not in my $PATH, it needs to be added.
However I do not know how to do this. Helps required please.
Thanks in advance
ps: also my 320GB external HDD (in NTFS format) is not being read by the system. I downloaded some ntfs drivers but am getting the same C compiler error. I guess solution to this will solve that problem too.
Hmm, you probably don't have the gcc executable. What you have probably found is a directory (folder in winspeak) with libraries. You will have to install gcc, for that I guess you need to have some sort of support contract with redhat or perhaps it is on your install cds. Have a look here:
Any reason you chose redhat over a free distribution? A free distro would make your life easier.
For starters xine would already be packged for you.
Did you install gcc through YUM package manager ?
If not do it that way, AFAIK this way it will get detected by the system.
Don't forget to do updatedb after that !
