Unable to install crclient which is an executable file for linux

Hi all,
I'm new to Linux world. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04. I'm unable to go online using Ubuntu because I'm unable to run an executable client application provided by my ISP. I called them and they are not able to help me instlling this client applicatoin for me on my Ubuntu. "I cannot go online untill I install this ISP client application on my Ubuntu." I'm entering my ISPs weblink in this blogpost so that it would be easy for you guys to help me resolving this issue. http://www.spacenetindia.net/download.php This is the weblink where I downloaded that ISP client application from. I clicked on this link and clicked on 24online clients.exe tab located on the left and downloaded linuxclient.gz. Please help me if you find any resolution for this issue. Though I tried downloading Wine but I could not as I cannot go onlnie in Ubuntu. In windows I don't know how to install wine to make it work offline in ubuntu. Plz help!!

You downloaded a gzipped file. The first thing you need to do is unzip it. To unzip it use the gunzip command. Then you should have an executable file you can run. To double check use the file command.

Unable to run executable file

Sir
I'm able to unzip it but once it's unzipped another file comes out of it and the file name is crclient and this file is an excutable file. I wont be able to go online in ubuntu till the time this crclient is executed. And I've heared that I have to install wine on ubuntu to run this executable file but unfortunatily I cannot go online in ubuntu but windows.

Why not? What is your connection and why is crclient needed?

You are implying that crclient is a Windows executable--If so, yes you will need WINE. But let's get your internet working first. See above

Unable to run executable file

Once I went on this link http://www.spacenetindia.net/download.php I clicked on 24online clients.exe tab located on the left and downloaded linuxclient.gz then I clicked on this .gz file and extracted it on my desktop in ubuntu then it gave me another icon on the desktop which is crclient and crclient is an executable file as per it's properties and now I'm unable to execute this crclient file.

"I would be glad if you try to install this application on your pc and check if I'm wrong about file type." Though It's my first time that I'm using linux OS and didn't take any training session yet for operating linux.

OK!!

What confused me was your statement that you had read something about needing WINE. If it really is for Linux, then you do not need WINE.

Please give us the details of your internet connection so that we can understand why you might need this file.
For example:
cable, DSL, or dialup?
Do you have a router?
Wireless?
Static IP or DHCP

In a terminal or virtual terminal window type:
locate crclient

This will show the path to crclient.

then type:
ls -l <path/to/crclient>
and post the output here.

You may have only a permissions problem.

Ok! Understood that I don't need wine as it's not a file for windows. However when I went in the properties of this file then it said that it's an executable file but when I tried opeing this file with firefox it said that the FILE TYPE is BIN.

I have wired Cable internet connection. However my ISP has setup a Wireless box on my house's roof and a blue cat 5 cable comes from that box and cable goes to a little spiliter kind of box and then from that littile box another Gray cat 5 cable goes to the NIC. It's DHCP

crclient is saved on my desktop
sunnyboy@ubuntu:~$'/home/sunnyboy/Desktop/crclient'
when I hit enter it says ./crclient: You can run the executable with name 'crclient' only.

So---who told you that you needed "crclient"?

Can you connect to that same connection using other computers?

No I cannot connect to the internet on any computer. crclient is a prerequisite to go online as it's internet client application on which I have to login first before I can go online. It's my ISP who told me that I have to logon to this application to go onlnie or else it wont let me connect to the internet.

I have NEVER heard of an ISP requiring such a thing. To be sure, they often offer utilities to make life easier, but it's usually possible to connect manually. Have you tried simply putting in the right configuration?

You say the this SW was supplied by the ISP....Do they provide support?
