Do you realize you first start a kismet server instance, then start a client to access it (both can be on the same machine)? Can you explain what you mean by "It opens but there is nothing going on"? If it is cycling through all the channels but nothing else is showing up it may simply mean that there are no WAPs in range.

Hi,
This is wat i do.
I turn on my laptop with backtrack on cd, in my cd drive, I boot it from there and get that all going. I then open up kismet and it does not do anything. I am in range of a few AP's so I dont know wats going on

What do you mean you need a server instance other guy? Umm... for me, after I compile drivers that support monitor mode for my card I simply run:

$ sudo kismet

and all is good. To my knowledge you do NOT need a server instance, at least not if you plan to listen to air traffic...

To the topic poster try:

$ sudo iwconfig interface mode monitor (interface is your wireless network adapter.. usually eth1 or wlan0)
$ sudo iwconfig

And look to see if it is in monitor mode. If it fails for any reason and remains in managed mode you'll have to see if there are drivers for your network card which support monitor mode...
