unable to get beyond welcome logo in Linux Mint 17.3
 

I am trying to instal Linx Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64-bit on a new computer - Atom chip, 4 Gb RAM. I made a USB installation pendrive, and seem to make some headway - but get stuck at the Linux Mint logo. I think that LM is hiding there somewhere inside, because when I right click on the Desktop, I can call up a Terminal screen, which gives me a list of folders when I give it the "dir" command. But that's about the limit of what I can do.

The computer came ready installed with a very basic Ubuntu version they called Red Ant - which had hardly anything at all.

Does the link below show the system you are using? Apparently you got the lite version.

When you downloaded Mint, did you do an md5 checksum to verify the download was good? What software did you use to create the bootable flash drive? Do you have another computer available in which to test the flash drive to see if it boots to eliminate that as a potential problem? Also, it is clear whether the problems you are having are with the boot usb or if you have Mint installed and can't access it?

I am using Linux Mint on another computer, and I used that to download Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon - but did not do an md5 checksum. (In fact, I wouldn't know how to!) But the raw image I downloaded is 1.6 GB. And I used the installed software on that computer to make a "Bootable USB".

I suspect that I do have Mint installed in some form, because the Red Ant software that I got originally did not give me access to a Terminal window. Whereas right-clicking on the Desktop does, now.

Meanwhile, I will try and seen if the USB boots on another computer.

I have made some progress. Ran a full installation, and after some time, got a message that the installation was complete. But when I restarted the computer, i was still stuck at the LinuxMint 17.3 logo. Right-clicking on the desktop, I was able to call up Terminal. And when I gave the command "whoami" at the commandline, the reply I got was the username that I had selected during the installation. So, I suspect that LinuxMint is running somewhere in there. But still won't let me get past the logo!

Please boot the live Mint USB. Open a terminal, and enter the command
inxi -Fxz
The live Mint USB includes Firefox, so you can use that to post the results here.

Is the Mint you installed the only system on this computer?
Did you install using UEFI or MBR?
Did you set it up to autologin or to require a password to login?

Mint is the only system on this computer.
I installed it using UEFI, I think. I used the default "make bootable usb" on my other linux computer.
I tried to set it up to autologin.
