Unable to find GRUB files?

I compiled my kernel and I am currently using kernel 2.4.17 and when I boot into the custom kernel 2.4.17. I can't see any of the GRUB files in the Boot folder? So say I want to update my kernel to 2.4.18 after booting into 2.4.17 is this possible? or do I have to boot into the Redhat kernel to do this? Just wondering why none of the Grub files get copy over to 2.4.17?
