Unable to dial up. Why is my Conexant modem not correctly found?

New to Linux. My Conexant d850 56k v.9x dfvc modem works well using Home XP.

In Linux using KDE KPPP only the MODEM Query on ttys0 seems to give me a modem found but the query results show all those ATI values as blank

Also ..
Configuring and then trying to activate thru Gnome system-config-network I get "FAILED TO ACTIVATE WITH ERROR 8"

Any ideas. Do I have one of those Winmodems that will not work?

Unhappy trying to install LINUXANT driver

I've gotten as far as downloading the LINUXANT driver needed to make my CONEXANT modem work in linux but get this message ...

"... 2400full_k2.6.5_1.358-1fdr.i686.rpm
warning: hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04082400full_k2.6.5_1.358-1fdr.i686.rpm: V3 DSA
signature: NOKEY, key ID 5dfbf7dc
error: can't create transaction lock ... "

after going to the terminal window and used command "rpm -i (above rpm file) "

any ideas ?

I have exactly the same modem I'm trying to get working in Suse 9.1, I install hsf driver using Yast2, It installed ok. also u need to get the right driver for your kernel version ,
so u will need the kernel Version number.
As of yet, I still have to check it with Kppp, but I'm getting the same error 8 in conect log of Kinternet.

I am having that same error on installation with Fedora Core 3.

"error: can't create transaction lock "
Did anyone figure it out yet?

I am using the newest version with the correct kernel.

problem solved...

Alright, just in case anyone else is getting this error, try logging in as root.
Worked for me.

Now, however, I am getting a different error:

error: %post(hsfmodem-7.18.00.02full_k2.6.10_1.741_FC3smp-1fdr.i686) scriptlet failed, exit status 1

If anyone could tell me what this means I would really appreciate it.
