Unable to connect Virtualbox XP Guest to MySQL on Ubuntu Host

Hi All

I'm a newbie (of course) running Ubuntu 9.04 on laptop as the host and installed Virtulbox OSE ver 2.1.4
I have installed XP SP3 as a guest and installed MyODBC 3.5.1 so that the guest can connect to my MYSQL database that is installed on the host.

I have turned off XP firewall, and firestarter but cannot seem to get the xp guest to connect to the database. When creating a new Datasource in XP the mysql odbc connector cannot find the database.

I can ping localhost, from XP guest and access the internet fine.
Ping localhost in XP guest returns 127.0.0.1
ipconfig in XP guest 10.10.1.10

Reading up on the forums - it appears that I need to bridge the networks. Though in one how-to article http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=346185 it says that I don't need to do this.

however I have followed the instructions in the article above but still does not work. What am I missing? Anything to do with a wireless card?

Thanks for the help

Paul

Would be easier for you to install the Personal Use and Evaluation Licence version of VB. All the network issues you are having are more or less sorted in that version. OSE is not officially supported by VB, and does not have proper guest additions.

Good stuff, post and let us know how you get on. Once you have the guest OS installed, in your case XP, you need to install guest additions. Then test your mysql DB.

Just out of interest, your XP VM may appear in VB once you install the PUEL version. Try running it, and perhaps you may not need to reinstall XP.
