You are using eth1 as your primary interface? What is on eth0?
More than likely an unknown interface is the result of the module (driver) failing to load. Find out what hardware is installed and load the appropriate module.
#modprobe <your module>
#ifconfig should display the interface.

You probably installed a new kernel version with dist-upgrade.
Your network card probably had a proprietary driver which was not in the apt-get repository.
You have to reinstall your NIC driver.
Which distro is it BTW? Debian, Ubuntu, or something else? And what is your NIC model?

sorry for the delay/luck of info.

distro :
upgrade from 3.1 rc1 to unstable.
Kernel 2.6.16-2-k7

Hardware :
eth0 and eth1 are Realtac 8139(from dmesg).

i tried nomures options to connect to the net:
such as
/etc/init.d/networking start
pptp script

even tried by dhcp ...
nada ..
it always say :
unknown interface eth1=eth1 and eth0=eth0.

ifup & ifconfig didn't saw the devices.

the only way to connect to the network was by internet -w -> internet --connect (aka iwiz)
and even that was for few moments.

finaly i installed mdk ,
made a clean install of 3.1 and upgraded to testing (by now no errors)

thnx ppl ..

      CABLEGW=`/sbin/route -n | grep ^0.0.0.0 | awk '{print $2}'`

/sbin/route add -host myisp gw $CABLEGW
      /sbin/route del default
