I purchased a computer with Linspire 5.0 & replaced it with Fedora Core Release 1 (kernel 2.4.22, I think). I have a 56k modem that came with the computer (model HP56SU, P/N 4156A15005). Under the KPPP setup, Modem tab, I selected the Query Modem button & was unable to connect for all the device locations. Help would be appreciated.

I am wondering if Linspire contained a (possibly proprietary ) driver for the modem that FC doesn't have. If you're not averse to a little leg work, assuming you did not get a Linspire disk with the computer, you could download the propretary enabled version of FreeSpire, install it and see if it can handle the modem. If so, you can find out what driver it is using and see whether your distro of choice contains that driver. If it is a proprietary driver, you might be up a creek ...
