Unable to connect debian Virtual Machine to internet

I'm running windows XP with a Debian Virtual Machine installed using Vmware Server. My XP connects to the internet ok, but my debian VM isn't connecting. In my vmware server settings I have NAT as network type. When I run apt-get update I get the following error "Could not resolve www.backports.org", in my /etc/network/interfaces I have edited and set it to:
Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

My windows is running DHCP, when i type ipconfig on windows

Code:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.32.1
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : si.rr.com
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.174.254.163

        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 68.174.252.1

Do i need to do any additional configuration on the debian side to get to work?

make sure the vm has a network card and type these commands
echo "auto eth0" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "iface eth0 inet dhcp" >> /etc/network/interfaces
ifup eth0

I ran the command, I know it modified my /etc/network/interfaces, I also noticed that I can ping google.com but not debian.org and not backports.org, within my /etc/apt/sources.list I have the backports url deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free but I keep getting the same error. When I ping the IPs they work, I've tried replacing the URLS with the IPs in the sources.list file but no luck.
