unable to configure wireless in opensuse 11.0
 

I am VERY new to linux...again. It has been about 8 years since I have messed it and then it was very limited.

Here is the message I am getting, can anyone help out. I will need it Big Bird style.


AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (Not connected)
BusID : 0000:02:00.0

Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.

Can you paste the results of 'lspci' from terminal without the quote marks.

I am sorry, I have no idea what Ispci is or where I can find it. I have no problems downloading the correct drive in Windows and downloading it and making it functional, but am in serious trouble when it comes to linux.

lspci is with the 'L' instead of 'I'. This is a command you can use from terminal to access information about the hardware internally in your computer. I can not get to my Suse now so doing this from memory. To access terminal if you are using kde you need to go to your desktop menu and then system and then I believe it is terminal and then you have a choice of X or terminal. You want terminal. Now first I suggest you do some reading and keep your installation cd handy. There are a lot of Basic Linux articles that are written far better than I can do that will help you in the use of terminal. Use Google, it is your friend for looking up this type of information. If you have any more questions I will try and help.

Some basics...

Here is a list of bash commands including "lspci" and some of its options. For more information open a terminal and type "man lspci" You might also use the command "dmesg" in a terminal and post the results. There is a "man dmesg" too.

Have a bit of patience, linux will require that you re-adjust somewhat from the way you have done things in Windows since you were last with us in linux.

Without doing your research for you on google, you will probably be looking at either modprobing the ath5k module and rerunning yast2's network configuration wizard, or using the older madwifi. As a last resort try ndiswrapper.

PS. I don't know where I got it in my head that you are using openSUSE after (mis)reading the posts. Could you put your distro in your user profile. That will help people familiar with your distro give you the easiest advice. What I said about YaST2 is SuSE specific.

There may have been a problem with the AR242s firmware requiring the latest updates or kernel version (post march 2009) to properly detect the device, from the gist of what I read while searching info on this device.
