Unhappy Unable to access partitions on 10G HD

I am very new to Linux. I have a Compaq Deskpro EN with Suse Linux 8.2 installed. Multiple user configuration.

Description of Problem:
HD was at 94% utilization. Attempted to uninstall websphere. Unable to do so due to space issues. Attempted to remove non-critical packages. Rebooted machine. Boot problems begin to occur.

Initial Boot:
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

SUSE 8.2 CD 1 -
Update from existing system
No Linux root partition found
Boot existing system
No Linux root partition found
Rescue system
Attempt to mount /dev/hda1 mnt
mount point mnt does not exist
Contents of fstab
/dev/root / ext2 defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts

Originally had swap file on /dev/hda1 and another partition on /dev/hda2. Not sure if things have been totally corrupted.

I really need to restore my access to the data on
I have purchased new hard drive 150G, it becomes master and old 10G becomes the slave. Reinstall SUSE 8.2 on new hd and it may resolve issues with other partitions. Will this work?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

Yes and for anyone else that posts the same question more than once. You must have accidently posted it twice then.. This one will be closed though. Please reply to your other thread here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=97210

Regards.
