umu10k1 instal

o.k i downloaded the emu10k1 thing, put it on cd and dropped the cd in my kde system.
I tried to install it and said to look at the "read me" file...
Well that thing might as well be written in German, because I can't understand a single thing it's talking about.
Why can't I just click an executable like in Windows?!?!?!?!

Help

oh yeah when it loads kde it errors saying that it cant mount the sound server or something, and that it will load it in "null". huh?

also I looked in some pci hardware manager thing similar to Windows Device Manager and it recognizes both my sound card and nic, but says they are only useable in Root. AAARRRRGGGHHHH

Make sure kernel sources is installed and matches your current kernel, extract the package and just type "make" then follow the instructions (basically keep typing "make")

I recommend using a newbie-friendly distro to begin with, try Mandrake, Fedora or even Knoppix, these distros detect and configure your hardware automatically.
