umask


tryin to change file permissions to a directory and all files and dirs below it
numerical mode: 0744
cant get it to work for the life of me
help?

Are you trying to umask or chmod it?

chmod -R 744 /some/directory/

That command should work and change all the permissions beyond in all subdirectories.

man chmod
man umask
