Ultra VNC On Windows Laptop connecting to Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Guys I have Ultra vnc in the laptop xp home, trying to connect to Ubuntu, but Ubuntu 8.04 isn't allowing this, (Access denied)

is there any non technical way I can fix this problem.

a friend of mine rigged it up that I could tranfer data from one pc to another, but I have changed laptops etc, and I know longer can do this.

However can a setting in Ubuntu 8.04 be stopping my connection ?

Any pointers would be appreciated.
I.Q is in single figures, so please keep it simple if possible.

Thanx
Gary

I'm a little confused; you're on a windows box and are trying to get data to/from an ubuntu box over VNC? Or are you on the ubuntu box and the XP box is somewhere else, like at work? Do you have access to both machines? Which one have you just changed?

There may not be a non-tech way, but more info is needed

EDIT:
Sorry, I think I understand. You're using a windows box to remotely control an ubuntu box (with ultra VNC) and are using a different method to share files?

Ubuntu is blocking connections from ultra VNC, and you also need some file transfer stuff?

to activate vnc, System->Preferences->Remote Desktop, click Allow other users to view your desktop & allow other users to control your desktop. Choose appropriate Security option to suit your need.

About transfer file, it is depends how your friend configure the Ubuntu Server. Please get more information from him.

I am sorry, confusing you, Laptop=Win xp home
Tower has Ubuntu 8.04 = I use this as a media player, connected to my Projector.

However everytime I want to listen to some music I must first boot up the projector, then lower the projector screen, this is burning lot's of hours from the life of the projector bulb.
Plan was to access Ubuntu 8.04 from my Laptop(Win xp home) using Ultra VNC, and I hoped to be able to exe an album in Ubuntu, and listen to it, this would stop me having to boot up the projector, lower the screen etc.

Ubuntu has access to the internet (wire conneceted)
Laptop has access to the internet (wireless)
both PC are behind a router

Tried the System, Prefrences, Remote Desktop, but no luck

a year ago, my friend connected up both PC so that I could transfer files from one to another, but after a format on the laptop this isn't possible anymore, and anyhow, I couldn't exe anything on my Ubuntu.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated, friend suffers from M.E. so some times it's a while till he is in the zone so to speak, and I don't like to ask until he is on a good period.

Again thank you
Gary

after Tried the System, Prefrences, Remote Desktop, it should allow vnc connection. Unless your your network got problem or firewall got problem.

at linux server, make sure the connectivity is there and try this command: 'sudo /etc/init.d/ufw stop', then retry vnc from windows xp.

Thanx Kstan, but access denied, beginning to doubt that what I require is reachable.

Many thanx

Gary
