Ubuntu16.04 freezing on purple screen when booting up

Hey everyone, I just installed and updated Ubuntu16.04 this morning and updated all the updates. It was working fine, then the last three times I tried to boot it, it comes up on the Ubuntu screen with all 5 dots lit, CNTRL-alt-del does nothing like I read on a forum, any ideas besides reinstall? I'm running Dell E5520 I5 processor laptop, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive if that helps. Thanks in advance.

The most likely culprit in such situation is the graphics card.

Try booting into recovery mode (it should be an option in the Grub boot menu, but you may have to hunt a bit to find it) and let us know what happens.

ALso, if you know what graphics card is in that machine, post that information. (If you successfully boot into recovery mode, you can go to a root prompt and run the command lspci (list pci devices); that should report the graphics chipset). You can then exit by issuing the command shutdown now -h.

It might be a Plymouth issue.

When grub boots up add "nomodeset" to the end of "quiet splash"
(Press 'e' when Grub boots up)

Code:
quiet splash nomodeset
Than ctrl + x to boot.

Thanks for replying guys, unfortunately the battery died in the laptop, but also didn't register the power cord being plugged in. So this leads me to think there's more going on hardware-wise... This was a "spare laptop" anyways, so I wanted to play around with Ubuntu a little bit. I think I'm just going to stick with using Kali. If I do put the time into it to properly diagnose, I will post it. Again, thanks for the help guys!

You're Welcome-
Did the spare laptop have some age to it?

Sorry it died on you.

Nahhhh it's ok, I bought it used off of eBay about a year and a half ago. It served me well until this point. I am running an HP 2560 notebook, I7 2nd gen, 16gb ddr3 ram and a 480gb ssd hard drive. Not sure about the graphics card, I've never been into gaming, but this thing flies on crunch!!! Have to run a laptop cooler with it though, she warms up! I'm really motivated to learn all aspects of what Kali has to offer, I am reading up on how wireless networks work, pretty much learning as I go, if I don't know what the tutorial is referring too, I try to find out as much info as I can. It's challenging but very rewarding!

Your HP sounds nice.

Good luck with Kali-
