keep in mind that you can easily install another desktop manager too. Also keep in mind that a new ubuntu release is about to come out. You might be due for an upgrade.
I deleted the profiles and also reinstalled the desktop,but both failed.I just edited the file /etc/default/grub because I prefer the console.but then when I type startx,my desktop's gone
You might do best to install 13.10 or 14.04 beta (yes, its a beta, but its pretty close to release) as 12.10 is 'end of life, out of support' in april 2014.
