Ubuntu won't boot error missing libasound.so.2

Hello All

I am a absolute nooooobie, and have to date enjoyed the experience of learning Linux.

I now have an issue that I cannot seem to resolve and would appreceiate any help to resolve.

Following an update of Ubuntu and reboot I have come accross the following error (Not also recently installed Realtek AC97 Driver)

Code:
Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds......

detail:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_NZ.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_All linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.
/usr/bin/seahorse-agent: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
Could someone please advise where too from here as I can only load terminal at this point.

I have searched through a number of threads on this and it would appear most people that have had this error have been able to complete their boot sequence.

Thanks in advance.

Things to try:
1) run dmesg to see if any more information about the problemshows up in boot messages.
2) inspect the contents of /var/log/messages in the search for more information.
3) try re-installing libasound2 (which provides libasound.so.2).

"apt-get --reinstall install libasound2" worked for me.
