Ubuntu...wireless...help!!!

So I tried looking at other posts on this subject but couldn't find any that have my exact problem...or I just don't understand I am completely new to this Linux OS (1st time user when I just turned the thing on), I just got my Meso G Netbook today and am having great difficultly connecting to the internet. I've followed what it says to do and I cannot get it to connect. I cannot even get it to display the Network Manager where I should be able to select my network - I've got nothing.. I tried to set it up manually as I would with my Windows XP but no dice. I'm wondering if I need to update the system to get this to work but I can't get connected to the internet to download them... I'm getting extremely frustrated and am ready to throw it out the window! If anyone could please help me I would be very greatful, thank you!!

Okay, I looked up the Meso G.
I don't really have a way of knowing how different their Ubuntu interface is from a default Ubuntu interface.
On a "normal" Ubuntu install you can click on System -> Administration -> Network to configure either wireless or wired interfaces.
Are your instructions different? If so what are they?
