I recently upgraded my system and now the desktop is blank. What happened to my icons and menu bar?

Most likely you upgraded to either gnome3 or unity desktop
For gnome3:

Unity:

Without any information, like what you were using and what you upgraded to, what your hardware is etc) it is extremely difficult to know what has happened. I'd be taking a look at the links EDDY1 has kindly posted for you. If that doesn't work maybe give us some more information and we can work from there.
