Ubuntu unable to read the symbolic link for Java?

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy on my laptop, and wanted to run Java. So I followed the instructions on the website - downloaded the file, installed it, created a symbolic link to the plugins folder in both the mozilla and firefox folders - I wasn't sure which was right, and saw that other people on here had been advised to put links in both, so I tried that first. But when I now look at the link in either plugins folder I find that the libjavaplugin_oji.so file has an orange circle with a cross in it in the the top corner - which the Ubuntu key tells me means that the file is unreadable.

Does this mean that I downloaded the wrong file? If so, where can I get the right file? Will the same thing happen if I try to install the flash player?

Many thanks.

I cant interpret your description of what you are seeing - but:
the easy way of installing software in Ubuntu (as in most distributions) is to use the package management system and the tools this provides.
In Ubuntu this is "apt-get" and the GUI-Frontend is called synaptic - it is found somewhere in your "System" menu.
The same goes for almost any software such as flash-player.
Dig through some documentation on how Ubuntu handles software installs/updates - it is very good and easy to find (IMO).

Thanks for the advice; after some fiddling around it worked perfectly!
