ubuntu studio?

Hi guys, I have been reading about audio and multimedia production distros. I have installed ubuntu studio 11.04 in virtual box to try and was thinking in upgrading to 11.10, but I have read and heard some comments that 11.10 is really unstable, bla, bla.
And I do NOT like unity...
1- Is usbustu 11.10 stable or not? does it have problems?
2- What multimedia (mostly audio) production distro would you recomend?

THANKS
Pablo

I don't know specifically about 11.10 but Ubuntu in general doesn't belong to the most stable family of distros. Having said that, as far as I know, with its real-time kernel and preinstalled packages, Ubuntu Studio might be the best out-of-the-box option at the moment.

If it's a virtual machine, why don't you install 11.04 in as another VM and check which one works better on your system?

My multimedia distro of choice is Slackware with the SlackerMedia docs as a guideline for setting it up ( see http://slackermedia.info/ for more information)

As for ubuntu 11.04.. I'm not sure about the stability of it really, but you may be best staying with an LTS release for stability. (I think 10.04 is the current LTS)

You might look into Dyne:bolic as well. Its built from the ground up to be a multimedia workstation, with an emphasis on FOSS code.

http://www.dynebolic.org/

That said, I've also found slackware to be a good platform for multimedia work, mostly video and graphic arts in my case. It takes time to set up, but once tweaked is very stable and reliable...much more so than other distros I've used (Ubuntu, Fedora).
