Hello,
I,m totally new to Linux (Ubuntu ) I installed Ubunto on my hard disc which already had windows XP on board. Split the disc into two partitions (one for each O.S) and all seemed OK until I ripped a CD and triedto play it back. All that I get us a rat tat tat type noise (like a motor boat) and the screen locks solid. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Does the CD play normally?
Did you try ripping to wav or ogg/vorbis?

Another possibility is that the CD contains DRM. You should also make sure that you can properly play mp3s that have not been ripped.
