Ubuntu or Kubuntu?

Hello, I like many people new to linux am a little confused because of all the choices that are available. I've tried downloading a few distros, Suse, Debian, Mepis, Xandros, Ubuntu and Kubuntu . What seems to happen is that each of them has something that turns me to another distro. I tried linux last year, but faced hardware difficulties, mainly because of my raid hard drive and sound card, but these seem less of a problem with the 2.6 kernel it would appear.

I currently have Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed, the reason is so that I can learn both Gnome and KDE, but it seems silly to me to take up space on a hard drive that is just a duplication. Is there a simple way of installing a version of Ubuntu and having a choice at the login screen as to which GUI I use? I know other distros offer this but I have found the least problems with Ubuntu. The only concern I have is that music plays at half speed from the CD player I've no idea what's happening there, it also does it when I rip a cd track to ogg or flac. Any ideas on that.

Thanks for reading my first post.

essentially unbuntu and kubuntu are exactly the same thing with a different *default* DE. you can install gnome instnatly in kubuntu and KDE in ubuntu. just use apt-get and you'll be laughing.

I have tried kubuntu in the past, but stability issues sent me to ubuntu. With ubuntu, I loaded up kde, and have had no stability issues. Right now, I can load gnome, kde, or fluxbox with no problems.

If you are using Ubuntu, you can install Kubuntu using:
Code:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
If you are using Kubuntu, you can install Gnome using:
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
There is another *Ubuntu, called Xubuntu, which uses the XFCE desktop environment.
Code:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
Ubuntu and Kubuntu use exactly the same base system, and all the same packages. I have no idea why Twilli has stability issues with Kubuntu but not Ubuntu, because they are essentially the same system.

I hope this helps

hello, I am trying to install KDE into Ubuntu and when I use the commands provided in this thread, it tells me that the package "kubuntu-desktop" does not exist. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

have you altered your repositories to include universe and multiverse?
Go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager and in the Settings>Repositories and use the Add dialogue ticking the boxes for Universe and Multiverse
