Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 7.1 on a Dell Inspiron 2600. After the initial boot phase, the monitor displayes a screen of verticle lines of varying colors and widths. The system still performs normally when booting windows.

Also, can anyone tell me the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu, Other than bundled software and asthetics?

Thanks in advance

Question Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 2600

I am also a total Linux Newbie although I have spent over 50 years in computing! The install seems to be progressing and then does a system restart and everything goes blank! I guess there is a problem with support for the graphics, but have no idea how to resolve the problem!

I did manage to run Ubuntu on my desktop PC without problems. I tried open SUSE but got lost when it asked for Linux Login. I tried root which got me one line further!

Help appreciated.

Thank you

Bernard

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Is this during the initial boot (i.e. before you actually start the install), or booting after the install has completed ???.

Exclamation

The Dell Inspiron 2600 Configuration is as follows:

Microprocessor: Intel Celeron 1066GHz
System chip set:Intel 830MG
Memory: 256MB PC133 SDRAM
Video: direct AGP integrated garphics, Controller: Intel(R) 82830M
Audio: AC97 Controller: Sigmatel 9700.

I have not installed any special drivers. I have just updated the BIOS to A08.

I was trying to boot from the Live CD.

Thank you

Bernard

Could you try plugging your monitor into the laptop to see if it is an actual graphics card problem or not?

Sounds like you have the same stupid video setup as I do on an 1100 - it comes up with minimal video memory and is adjusted later. Windoze only of course.
I had to resort to the alternate Ubuntu CD, and do the initial install in "safe video" (I think it was called something like that) mode.
Once up you need to change the video driver to i810 - it now incorporates the 915resolution hack to get around this video problem. May need to set your (native) horizontal and vertical sync as well.
And 256Meg is about the lower limit for (normal) Ubuntu - Xubuntu (uses a less resource hungry desktop) may be a better option. Will still probably have the same video issues.
